Indonesian police open fire on civilians in West Papua

Catholic brother says one person was killed and two injured when police shot at villagers who refused to cut hair and beards.
One person is said to have been killed and at least two others injured on Monday when Indonesian riot police opened fire on civilians in Waghete, West Papua. Spokesperson for the Papuan provincial police Sulistyo Pudjo told Guardian Australia that the shooting occurred when police tried to disperse a mob that was attacking them. "There were provocateurs who were throwing rocks at the police and military. One military person was wounded," he said.

According to KNPB, 249 of their members have been arrested

Jayapura: The National Committee of West Papua - KNPB - has claimed that  249 members have been arrested by the police across West Papua because they took part in demonstrations to mark International Democracy Day on Monday this week.

This was announced by the co-ordinator of the action, Warpo Wetipo who was accompanied by the spokesman of the KNPB, Wim Rocky Madlama and the first deputy chairman of KNPB Agus Kossay. Warpo said that because International Democracy Day was on Sunday, they decided to hold their demonstration on the following day, Monday.

KNPB: 'Being arrested in nothing unusual - it strengthens our struggle'

Jayapura:  Even though the KNPB demonstration on Monday was forcibly dispersed by the security forces on 16 September, the organisation has every intention of holding another peaceful demonstration.

The spokesman of the organisation, Wim Rocky Medlama, said: 'Actually, we were planning to organise another demonstration on 18 September but we decided not to go ahead for certain reasons. But be assured that we will organise another demonstration very soon, possibly in the coming week.'

In the award ceremony, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, leader of the ACF said, SBY chosen because as a leader in the largest Muslim nation in the world, he is trying to pursue peace and help Indonesia develop into a democratic society and the fight against extremism. This award is recognition of his achievements in international efforts to maintain peace and encouragement to improve human rights, religious liberty, and interfaith cooperation.

Very sad news for KNPB Papuan activists that on May 26, 2013, Jekson Imam Wenda, 23 year old had died in Sentani, Papua. Jekson Wenda became a member of the National Committee of West Papua Sentani region in 2011. He is one of the agencies that take charge structure KNPB Sentani region and the focus of the work as a documenter militancy and media publications in the secretariat.

At first KNPB has issued a call to the people to carry out a peaceful demonstration. on Monday, June 4, 2012 hundreds of protesters were heading Abepura using 12 trucks. When mid-way precisely in Kampung Harapan blocked by police. The police took the demonstrators who want to return to the Jayapura city to avoid possibilities were Sentani demonstration.

Yahukimo Police Shoot Student – Victim In Serious Condition

Yahukimo Police have shot a student, whilst he was with friends at the Blue Creek at Yahukimo following their school graduation. The incident occurred on Sunday 19 May 2013 at 04.00 (West Papuan time) when Yahukimo Police were using a Police Patrol vehicle went to the above location.

At the moment the Police arrived they came upon a group of students at the location. A group of five students had been drinking alcohol. The police without questioning the students fired warning shots in the direction of the students. The students fled afraid of the police gunfire. Four of them succeeded in fleeing but the fifth named Carles Suhuniap was hit in the right shoulder by further police gunfire whilst trying to flee. Wounded, he was arrested by the police who became smeared with his blood.

The secretary of the KNPB – National Committee for West Papua -, Ones Suhuniap has said that the governor of Papua, the chief of police and the commander of  XVII Cenderawasih Military Command must all be held responsible for  the mysterious killings that occurred in Puncak Jaya during the month of April.

‘Mysterious disappearances and murders have again been happening in Puncak Jaya. Thirty people have disappeared. Eleven have been found of whom two were already dead. They also included two women and an SMA school pupil who had been raped. Two children ran away and were drowned in Yamo Canal.”

The KNPB said that these senior officials must accept responsibility for the mysterious killings that have been occurring in Puncak Jaya and should do everything possible to find out who was responsible for these crimes

Papuan political prisoners reject offer of Indonesian Government for amnesty


The bid by the Indonesian Government through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, to grant amnesty for some political prisoners in Papua was rejected by political prisoners at Abepura penitentiary.
 
The Papuan political prisoners’ statement which was signed by 25 political prisoners serving sentences in Abepura prison stated the following: “We reject the plan granting clemency by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.”

Opinion: Why is West Papua closed to foreign journalists?

Earlier this year I had a meeting with a friend who is a foreign journalist in Jakarta. During our conversation which lasted almost an hour, I asked him. ‘When are you planning to visit Papua to get information directly from there?’ My friend said: ‘We are not permitted by the Indonesian government to visit Papua. I have made several requests to visit Papua but the government has turned down all my requests.’ So I asked him: ‘Why are they not allowing you to visit Papua’ to which he replied: ‘The Indonesian government always says that it is not possible to guarantee the safety of foreign journalists in Papua. The OPM could kidnap or kill them.’

13 May Action is a Call for Justice Regarding Human Rights in Papua

Jayapura, – A human rights solidarity group in Papua, SPP-HAM declared that the action that took place on Monday, 13 May was clearly a call for justice  with regard to human rights violations which occurred in West Papua . But even so, the action was banned by the police.
 
As has been earlier reported, Action to Commemorate  the 1 May which Papuan activists regard marking the 50th anniversary of West Papua’s annexation by the Republic of Indonesia occurred in a number of places.

The Indonesian security forces, (TNI and Police) took repressive  and brutal  action against these actions which occurred in a number of places, such as Sorong, Fak-Fak, Biak, Nabire and Timika.

Six KNPB Timika Activists Sentenced to 8 Months Jail
